Dynamic vs static QR — which to use
Static is permanent; dynamic is editable. Decision tree.
Dynamic vs static QR
The single most important choice when creating a QR. Get this right and the rest is easy.
Static QR
The information is encoded directly into the pixels. The QR contains your data.
Pros:
- Permanent — works forever, even without internet, without any server
- Privacy — destination is in the QR; no scan logged anywhere
- Free, even at scale
Cons:
- Cannot be changed after printing. Wrong number? Reprint.
- No analytics
- Can't redirect, schedule, or geo-route
Use for: WiFi credentials, business contact details that won't change for years, plain text labels, fixed UPI / PIX amounts.
Dynamic QR
The QR contains a short URL (e.g. qrnfctap.com/X8K3M2). When scanned, it hits QR NFC Tap's redirect server which sends the user to wherever you configured.
Pros:
- Editable forever — change destination in the dashboard, every printed QR updates instantly
- Real-time scan analytics
- Can do smart routing (geo, device, time, scan-count)
- Can be scheduled (active dates) or expired
- Wallet pass updates push automatically
Cons:
- Depends on QR NFC Tap running. If we go offline, dynamic QRs stop until we recover. We target 99.9% uptime.
Use for: Anything where the destination might change. Marketing campaigns. Business cards. Restaurant menus. Sales links.
Decision rule
If there's any chance the destination could change in the next 5 years, pick dynamic.
QR NFC Tap prices reflect this — Free plan includes 5 dynamic QRs (the kind most people need) plus unlimited static.
